Systemic hypertension is associated with retinal changes depending on the severity and duration. Early signs of hypertensive retinopathy are chiefly diffuse and focal narrowing of the retinal arteries. More advanced disease is reflected by abnormal vascular permeability leading to retinal haemorrhages and exudates.
