There are several different ways of classifying red eye and it is clinically useful to differentiate between sight threatening diseases and more benign causes. However, even the milder aetiologies can be associated with significant morbidity and some conditions eg dry eyes, viral keratoconjunctivitis, may become more severe and affect vision.
